The regime type of a monarchical sultan in the Middle East and North Africa is very difficult to maintain due to one very important factor, it lacks the absolute control over the people’s every day life. Unlike an authoritarian regime which is spread out and controls the every aspect of the people due to it being the main employer of the citizens, a sultan is the only person who decides what the policies of the government and its people will be. While this seems very similar, a sultan is much more easily overthrown by the people because if he does not keep the military close to him then the military can turn on him and side with the people if the laws and rules that he implements are unpopular with the people. Also with a sultan, the needs of the people are very rarely met in a timely fashion because the sultan does not have his power spread throughout the many different levels of the society and therefore does not learn quickly what the lower class citizens need.
